The small, privately owned Grey Granite Railroad in Glastonbury, Connecticut has purchased its second steam locomotive, W.T. Smith Lumber Company #7. The 1913 Baldwin-built locomotive was recently up for auction as part of the collection of Royce Kershaw, along with several other pieces of railroad equipment. Joe Cavanna, the new owner of the locomotive, intends to restore it to steam and keep it as a wood-burner.
The Grey Granite Railroad is a new privately owned tourist railroad and is being built on Cavanna’s Farm. No. 7 joins 3 other locomotives on the property; a 1903 35-ton Plymouth, a 25-ton GE switcher, (both operational) and a 0-4-0 steam locomotive under restoration. Two cabooses and a boxcar converted to an open-air car provide space for passengers to ride on the select days that the railroad is open.
