Consumers Energy donates diesel switcher to Steam Railroading Institute

The Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) in Michigan has received a donation of a SW1200 EMD locomotive from Consumers Energy. Before being donated, the locomotive’s number was changed to 1155, which is the number designation given to steam locomotives built in 1941 by the Lima Locomotive Works for the Pere Marquette railroad.

The locomotive was built in the late 1950’s in London, Ontario and pulled its last coal train for Consumers Energy in 2022 at its Dan E. Karn Generating Plant in Essexville, MI.

SRI plans to use the locomotive in excursion service with Pere Marquette 1225 and switching passenger cars when revenue trains are not running. 1155 joins two other diesel locomotives used by SRI; a 25-ton GE switcher, and a leased GP40-2WH from Precision Locomotive.
