Canadian National boxcab to be returned to Canada

Canadian National #6714, a boxcar-type electric locomotive, is on its way home to Canada. The locomotive has been part of the collection at the Connecticut Trolley Museum since 1996, on display and out of service.

No. 6714 was part of a set of six locomotives designed by GE for the Canadian National railroad and built in 1917. Designated as a Z-1-a type, 6714 and her sisters pulled trains through the Mount Royal Tunnel in Montreal. The “boxcab” nickname was given to them due to their squared-off shape and flat nose, resembling a box. Four of the original six locomotives survive in preservation, although none are operational.

The locomotive will be going to the Halton County Radial Railway in Ontario, Canada. The line operates historic electric railcars over 2 kilometers of track. No restoration or display plans have been publicly announced for No. 6714 at this time.
