As part of New Jersey Transit’s 40th anniversary celebration, the railroad has donated a 1996 built ALP-44 electric locomotive to the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ (URHS). The locomotive, numbered 4424, arrived at the Boonton, NJ property this past weekend.
The ALP-44 is notable in that it was the first new electric type locomotive aquired by NJ Transit. Thirty-two were purchased new from ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) in Sweden and worked the commuter system, including the Northeast Corridor, till their retirement in 2011.
The donation from NJ Transit also includes all of the building and maintenance documentation of the ALP-44 locomotives from their time in revenue service.
No. 4424 is reported to be in good, almost original condition. Only minor cosmetic repairs are needed before it will be placed on display outside in the URHS’s yard. It will be available to be viewed at their upcoming Railroad Museum [For A Day] event on September 24th, 2023.
