Arcade & Attica purchases ALCO diesel switcher

The Arcade & Attica Railroad (A&A) in Arcade, New York has announced that they will be purchasing ALCO RS-3 #406 from the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad (WNY&P). The #406 was originally built for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad in September 1952, then rebuilt in 1975 by Morrison-Knudsen.

In 1976 the locomotive was repainted in red, white, and blue for America’s Bicentennial celebration. It wore this paint scheme even after being sold to Tioga Central and the Livonia Avon & Lakeville. Today #406 mainly works the yard job in Olean, NY.

The ALCO will become #114 on the A&A roster. Nos. 110-113 are GE center-cab diesels. The railroad also roster two steam engines; #14, a 4-6-0, has been stored for many years and #18, a 2-8-0 and another ALCO, which is receiving its 1472 day inspection. The railroad runs passenger excursions as well as freight, and it is not uncommon to see two of their center-cab switchers double-heading the train.
