Galloping Goose Historical Society obtains ownership of RGS goose #5

The town of Dolores, CO has transferred ownership of RGS Galloping Goose #5 to the Galloping Goose Historical Society after officially owning the railcar for almost 70 years.

The goose was bought from the Rio Grande Southern in 1952 after five people pooled together $50 each. The group formed a rotary club to take care of the group, but the bill of sale was made out to the town of Dolores so to save on tax since the group did not yet have non-profit status. A second bill of sale transferring ownership to the club once it obtained non-profit status never happened, leaving the town as the official owner.

The historical society previously leased the goose and ran excursions on railroads including the Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec. The railcar was built in 1933 by the RGS as an economic way to move small amount of freight, mail, and passengers over the struggling railroad.
