The Illinois Railway Museum has announced on Facebook that they have acquired an ex-C&NW SD50, currently residing in Silvis, Ill. It is believed to be the first EMD SD50 locomotive to be placed into preservation.
The C&NW purchased 35 SD50 locomotives in the 1980’s, which were then transferred to Union Pacific in the 1990’s when the company was merged into the UP. The facebook post shows that the locomotive (#7009) is still in it’s C&NW yellow and green paint, and will be transported to IRM’s campus shortly. No details have been publicly released as to whether to locomotive will be returned to operating condition.
